Credit Card Time

We've been married for about four months now, it's been awesome! But, it's time to start considering a place of our own. I mean we have our own place, but the problem is it's not ours. You guessed it, we're renting.
I honestly don't even think about it every day, but even I do it depresses me. I'm use to living out in the country. I had 80 acres to wander, I can't even begin to explain how much I loved it. I could pretty much do anything I wanted outside. But here I'm in a big town. I don't even have a back yard. I'm literally cooped up inside. If I want to enjoy a nice day, I have to go to a park. I don't say this very often, but this sucks!
Today we are going to go to the bank to see what type of loan we can get. If I'm correct it won't be enough to buy a house with at least one acre. I have absolutely zero credit, and my husband has okay credit, but I doubt it will be enough.  That's why we are also going to apply for a credit card sometime in the near near future.
Here's the funny thing, as a kid I swore up and down I would never and I mean never under any circumstances get a credit card. Numerous people have told me that was a wise idea. I can't even count how many people advised me against getting one. Anytime someone hears I don't have one they praise being responsible enough for not having one.
My question is why do credit cards have such a bad rap? Yes, I understand many people have became in debt with credit card bills, but it's all about responsibility. With these two rules, a credit card will be very beneficial for you.
1. Don't buy it if you can't afford it.
2. Pay your bill on time.
That's it. It's not rocket science, it's common sense.
Now, time to research credit cards to find which will be best for my husband and I.
